Topic Two: Pattern and Ornament - Assignment #1 Kit and Instructions

For this assignment, we had to construct a 3D piece, create instructions for it and have a classmate take those instructions and try to reconstruct it. I admit I wasn't exactly enthusiastic for this project (as 3D art in general is not my forte), but all the same I think it turned out okay.

This is the image I chose to base my piece off of. What follows is my process (documented as well for the instructions I would give to whoever got assigned my kit).

The only really concrete idea I started with was that a pyramid would be a part of the work. Everything else mainly came from taking processes I had learned in a 3D art class prior and creating different shapes and forms and seeing which worked best to emulate the drawing.

The finished piece.

And the instructions I wrote. I tried my best to be as understandable as I could, but as I was writing the instructions I realized some things were getting 'lost in translation' so to speak. So as an extra guard against that, I added in several photos detailing the process.

The original is on the left, the recreation on the right. Overall I think she did pretty well! It's evident I wasn't clear on a few things (like the length of the tube or spiral), but it seems the rest went over fairly well. (Somehow, I think it's even better than the original...)

And here's my recreation attempt (the original is the top one, mine is the bottom). It was going great up until the little green tabs came into play, and then everything got muddled. The markings she detailed in her instructions ended up confusing me, and I thought she'd meant for me to cut the tabs into the shape and attach them to the surface of the box instead of the top. However, those were the last few instructions. Everything before it had been clearly written out (and it looked professional to boot) and even came with a pre-drawn schematic for the box.
